Phil Johnstone is Visiting Professor in Sustainability and Sociotechnical Change at the University of Tartu, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Utrecht, and Visiting Research Fellow in Global Studies at the University of Sussex. With a background in Human Geography and Science and Technology Studies, his work explores the political and democratic dynamics of sustainability transitions.
Previously based at SPRU (Science Policy Research Unit), Phil has contributed extensively to Deep Transitions research and continues to engage with the Deep Transitions Lab. His research spans topics such as the role of the military in shaping sustainability, the state and incumbency in transitions, policy discontinuation, and deep transitions pathways. He has examined diverse sectors including energy, mobility, food, extractive industries, and digitalisation.
Phil is an engaged policy researcher who has provided evidence and advice to governments, NGOs, and media in the UK, Europe, and the USA.
For the Deep Transitions team Phil will be focusing on qualitative historical analysis of industrial modernity and researching industrial modernity-related blocking mechanisms that inhibit sustainability transitions and how these can be addressed in order to accelerate change towards sustainable futures.
